2014 A4 Winners

Wes Overvold

(18-24 category)

When not leading trips for Outdoor Programs, Wes can be found on skis, in boats, on bikes, and on trails throughout the High Country. He has a passion for human powered adventure and a drive to explore wild places. His connection with adventure and the outdoors is influencing his direction in life.

Wes inspires others to get outdoors through role modeling the benefits of outdoor experiences and using media to motivate others. This winter he led several students into new winter experiences. He taught them about backcountry travel on skis. As AppState RM student John Brundick says, "Wes is always looking to get people to share the passion for adventure."

While not a racer or a competitor, Wes represents his passion in an additional way by being an Ambassador for Mountain Khaki. He attends community events such as Rocky Knob Festival to promote his brand and outdoor adventure. He also helped bring the film Into the Mind to AppState.

Corin Brown

Corin Brown

(17 and under category)

Corin volunteers on ski patrol at App Ski Mountain and is involved in the Mountain Alliance program at Watauga High School, a climbing group in Boone, and Boy Scouts. He goes into the outdoors with all three of these groups as well as on his own with friends. He loves climbing and sharing that love with others. He is a leader in the Mountain Alliance program and he loves spending time pursuing outdoor activities.

Corin is dedicated to climbing and getting others to climb, but he is also conscious of his impact on the environment. He keeps Leave No Trace principles in mind when on a trip and lets others know why they should, too. Corin has also been involved in some of Mountain Alliance's service trips including river clean ups and trail building and is often a participant in their Youth Service Day. Corin is also in the process of helping run a fundraiser that will partially benefit Mountain Alliance which will, in turn, help other students continue to get involved in the outdoors through their programs.
