IDP Foundations Workshops
Foundations: Where It All Begins
All outdoor leaders need a foundation of knowledge, skills, and attitude that informs their practice, and Foundations serves as the bricks and mortar. We emphasise the history and key philosophies of outdoor education, exploring how people learn and how to foster positive group experiences, understanding the role or risk and responding to emergencies, and experiencing first-hand OP trips. The skills you learn and the ideas you explore will be recurrent themes throughout the Discipline Modules.

Recreation Management Majors: If you have already taken Principles of Outdoor Experiential Education, you may fast track through the IDP Foundations and immediately sign up for your participation trips and begin working on your IDP Essentials workshops. This must be approved by your RM Professor and an OP Coordinator.
Introduction to IDP and History, Philosophy and Roles in Outdoor Education
This workshop will tell you all you need to know about the IDP process. You'll know what to except throughout the IDP process and will have all your questions answered. You'll discuss the rich history of outdoor education from it's beginning through the development of ASU's very own Outdoor Program, which begin in 1973.
Risk Management in the Wilderness Setting
Managing risk in the wilderness setting is one of the most important skills you can develop as an outdoor leader. This workshop will teach you the importance of how a leader can manage risk properly in the field, discuss the various types of risk, and finally cover assessing risk and potential hazards.
Participants on an outdoor trip generally form a group for the period of time that they are together and these groups can pass through several stages of development. The ability to identify the stages of our group will enable you to understand and predict the behavior of the group and even better will allow you to subtly intervene and guide the group towards the height of their development—a community.
