Outdoor Programs Made Possible Scholarship Program

Background

In 2010, Outdoor Programs was awarded a gift from Polartec to establish a permanent scholarship program. This fund is intended to make outdoor opportunities accessible to more people through our program.

In the spring semester of 2012, Outdoor Programs gave away four financial scholarship awards to ASU students for a variety of different outdoor leadership opportunities. We are going to give away more scholarships this year. Please see the following links for more information including amounts to be given away, the timeframe, etc.

The awards are intended to be given to students on a financial need and/or merit basis. Please consider this when answering the questions on the following applications.

Journey Award

The Journey Award (up to $250) is intended for any current and full-time ASU student to use on an ASU Outdoor Programs trip, expedition, workshop, or program within one year of receiving award.

Qualifications for the Journey Award are:

  • Current Appalachian State University, full-time, undergraduate student

  • 2.5 Cumulative grade point average

  • Completed application form

  • Copy of unofficial transcript and current enrollment information from the Registrar’s Office (physically bring copy to OP offices at SRC)

  • Essay, 250 words minimum, describing how receiving the Journey Award would positively impact you as an Appalachian student and in your future goals (physically bring copy to OP offices at SRC)

  • Current resume (physically bring copy to OP offices at SRC)

Applications are being accepted NOW.  Deadline for applications is Friday, April 22, 2016.

Student Staff Leadership Award

The Student Staff Leadership Award is intended for any ASU student who is currently employed by Outdoor Programs. Student staff members can apply for this award to pay for any Outdoor Program, or other service providers, certifications, education courses, workshops or conferences within one year of receiving award.

Qualifications for the Student Staff Leadership Award are:

  • Current Appalachian State University, full-time, undergraduate student

  • 2.5 Cumulative grade point average

  • Current student employee of University Recreation in good standing

  • Duration of tenure working at OP (to be eligible for this award, candidates must at least be in their second semester of employment at OP)

  • Be a returning undergraduate student and continue employment through University Recreation for the upcoming/following fall semester

  • Completed application form

  • Copy of unofficial transcript and current enrollment information from the Registrar’s Office (physically bring copy to OP offices at SRC)

  • Essay, 250 words minimum, describing how receiving the Student Staff Leadership would positively impact you as an Appalachian student and in your future goals and detailing how your job at University Recreation has impacted your education (physically bring copy to OP offices at SRC)

  • Letter of support from your professional staff supervision (physically bring copy to OP offices at SRC) *optional recommendation letters from additional co-worker sources may be submitted

  • Current resume (physically bring copy to OP offices at SRC)
